OUD (OUDH)

Oud is a fragrant resin produced inside certain species of agarwood trees, particularly Aquilaria. When the tree is affected by a specific infection, it produces resin as a natural defence mechanism. That resin-rich wood is distilled to create oud oil, one of the most prized ingredients in natural perfumery.

Oud is known for its complex character, which can range from woody and earthy to smoky, sweet, resinous or slightly animalic. Its rarity and distinctive scent have made it an important part of perfumery across Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East for centuries.

Oud comes from the resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, which grows naturally across parts of Southeast and South Asia. Different regions and species can produce oud oils with very different scent profiles.

The quality and character of oud depend on factors including the species of tree, where it grew, how the resin formed and how the agarwood was distilled. This is one reason two genuine oud oils can smell remarkably different from one another.
